If you've read that hyperbaric oxygen can "reverse aging," the claim almost certainly traces back to one 2020 study. It's a genuinely interesting piece of science — and a perfect case study in reading health headlines carefully.
What the study did
Researchers at Israel's Shamir Medical Center and Tel Aviv University, led by Yafit Hachmo and Shai Efrati, enrolled 35 healthy adults aged 64 and older and gave them 60 daily HBOT sessions over 90 days. They measured two well-established cellular hallmarks of aging in immune cells drawn from blood: telomere length (the protective caps on chromosomes that shorten as we age) and the proportion of senescent cells (old "zombie" cells that stop dividing but linger and drive inflammation) (Hachmo et al., Aging, 2020).
What it found
The results were striking. Telomere length in several immune-cell types increased by more than 20% over the course of treatment, and the share of senescent cells dropped meaningfully — by roughly 10% to 37% depending on cell type. The authors concluded HBOT may induce "senolytic" effects — clearing aged cells — in an aging population.
Why you should be excited and cautious
Those numbers are real and were peer-reviewed. But three limitations matter enormously. First, the study was small — 35 people — and had no control group, so we can't fully separate the treatment's effect from other factors. Second, it measured changes in cells in the blood, not lifespan, disease risk, or how anyone felt or functioned; longer telomeres in immune cells are a promising biomarker, not a proven fountain of youth. Third, it used an intensive 60-session protocol, not a casual spa visit.
The researchers themselves framed it as opening a door for further research — not closing the case. That's the right posture. This is legitimate, provocative early science that justifies more study; it is not a finished result that justifies marketing HBOT as an anti-aging treatment. A later systematic review of hyperoxia and aging biomarkers echoed both the promise and the need for more rigorous trials (Frontiers in Aging, 2021).
If a clinic cites this study to sell you "age reversal," they're overstating what one small, uncontrolled trial can support. The honest read: fascinating, worth watching, not yet proven.
