Hard-Shell vs. Soft-Shell Chambers: Why the Difference Is Bigger Than It Looks

If you search for hyperbaric oxygen near you, you'll find everything from hospital wound centers to gyms and spas with inflatable pods. They are not the same treatment, and the difference matters for both effectiveness and safety.

Two very different machines

Medical HBOT uses hard-shell chambers engineered to reach the pressures used in clinical protocols — roughly 2 to 3 ATA — while the patient breathes 100% oxygen. This is the equipment used in the studies behind every recognized indication.

Soft-sided "mild" chambers (sometimes marketed as mHBOT) are inflatable and operate at much lower pressure — often around 1.3 ATA — typically with concentrated or ambient air rather than the delivery used in medical treatment. In the U.S., these are cleared for a single, narrow purpose: acute mountain sickness. They physically cannot reach the pressures used in most medical HBOT protocols.

Why the pressure gap changes the medicine

The therapeutic effects described in the research — dissolving meaningful oxygen into plasma, driving angiogenesis, reaching poorly perfused tissue — depend on the pressure and oxygen concentration used in those studies. Applying findings from a 2.4-ATA, 100%-oxygen protocol to a 1.3-ATA air pod is not a small extrapolation; it's a different intervention. A soft-shell session isn't necessarily worthless for relaxation, but you shouldn't assume it delivers what a clinical protocol delivers.

The question that cuts through the confusion

When you evaluate a provider, ask one question: What are your chambers, and what are they FDA-cleared for? A clinical facility can answer immediately — hard-shell, medical-grade, capable of the prescribed treatment pressure. If a provider can't or won't give a straight answer, that's your answer. It's also worth asking who supervises treatment and whether staff hold hyperbaric certifications, because a chamber is only as good as the clinical program around it.
