Star athletes have made hyperbaric chambers famous, and it's easy to assume that celebrity use means proven benefit. If you're training hard and chasing recovery or an edge, here's what the actual studies show — which is more nuanced than the hype.
Performance: little controlled support
For raw performance, the controlled evidence is underwhelming. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that HBOT before or after exercise had no significant effect on performance or recovery, though a few studies hinted that oxygen during exercise might help endurance — a finding the authors said should be treated with caution pending better studies (Frontiers in Physiology, 2021). In plain terms: the idea that a chamber session makes you meaningfully faster or stronger isn't well supported.
Recovery from injury: a more interesting signal
The picture improves — modestly — for recovery from muscle injury. A 2025 meta-analysis of ten studies reported that HBOT significantly accelerated recovery from exercise-induced muscle injury, though it didn't consistently help ordinary muscle soreness (ScienceDirect / muscle-injury meta-analysis, 2025). A separate 2025 review noted athletes returning to pre-exercise strength faster with HBOT in some studies, while stressing that the evidence base is limited to small samples (MDPI musculoskeletal review, 2025). So there may be a real role in bouncing back from a strain or overuse injury — but the studies are small, and this is not settled science.
The honest bottom line
The "Investigational" badge fits athletics well. There's mechanistic plausibility and some encouraging injury-recovery data, but no strong evidence that HBOT boosts performance, and mixed results for general recovery and soreness. (Worth noting: oxygen-based recovery methods are not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, so use is legal — that just doesn't make it proven.) If you're an athlete recovering from a specific injury, HBOT is a reasonable thing to discuss with a sports-medicine physician. If you're being sold a chamber as a guaranteed performance enhancer, the science doesn't back that up.
